Do you want to speak with the charismatic power of JFK, Martin Luther King or even Barack Obama? Do you ever think – there’s just something about that guy… he has such presence, he holds everyone’s attention and creates an amazing connection. Do you envy people who can build a bond with their audience quickly and seemingly effortlessly? Do you think have charisma? Do you have presence? Did you know you can consciously build you charisma as a presenter so that you establish rapport with your audience quickly and effectively?
Back in the early days of NLP researchers studied people regarded as highly charismatic speakers – in particular Martin Luther King and JFK. What they found was a common opening pattern in the way they started their speeches. That pattern that has since been called the Charisma Pattern, and is now used by CEO’s, politicians and many people, just like you and me, who want to connect and build rapport with their whole audience.
We all have preferred representational systems. I’ve covered the basic theory of this before, so if you’d like to read the introductory post on rep. systems you can find it here – Making Sense of the World Around Us. Basically we each have a preference for feeling (kinesthetic), hearing (auditory) or seeing (visual) information. It’s all about how we like to receive information, which is reflected in the words that we use, the way that we speak and how we then process, store and access information. By targeting all three – kinesthetic, auditory and visual – you can connect with everyone in your audience and use that rapport to get your key messages across effectively.
It just takes a few simple steps to adapt the opening sentences of your speech or presentation. Here’s an example of an introduction I’d use:
[Slow, almost hesitant, pausing, low pitch voice] Many thanks … for inviting us to … this meeting. We feel, er… it’s a great opportunity for us to … get to grips … with your needs and … and … make contact with, er… your team for the first time.
[Slightly faster, more varied tone, raise pitch and less pausing] We look forward to hearing more about your plans and hope that our strategy will really resonate with your expectations. We’ll certainly be all ears to listen to your feedback.
[Fast, higher pitch…] We hope that by the end of this meeting we’ll all have a common vision of the future and crystal clear agreement on how to deliver this project successfully.
Now let’s break it down…. I started slow, low, pausing with words that connect with someone’s feelings (for the kinesthetic’s among you). See the words highlighted in bold. Then I took it up a notch in terms of speed, tone, dropped the pauses and popped in words that connected with what you hear (for the folks that prefer auditory). Finally I took it up to my normal speed (fast in other words!) and moved to visual words to paint a picture for my audience and connect with the visual people in my audience. Got it?
